A simple analytical model and numerical simulations demonstrate that pulses with intensities exceeding 10 22 W/cm2 may efficiently accelerate ions to high energies up to a few GeV. Maximum ion energy and the energy spectrum of the accelerated ions can be tuned by an appropriate choice of laser pulse intensity and duration at a given plasma density distribution. © 2009 EDP Sciences, SIF, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. %G English %L hal-00838487 %U https://ensta-paris.hal.science/hal-00838487 %~ CEA %~ X %~ IOGS %~ UPMC %~ ENSTA %~ CNRS %~ UNIV-PSUD %~ X-LOA %~ X-LULI %~ X-DEP %~ X-DEP-PHYS %~ PARISTECH %~ ENSTA_LOA %~ DAM %~ UNIV-PARIS-SACLAY %~ UNIV-PSUD-SACLAY %~ UPMC_POLE_2 %~ SORBONNE-UNIVERSITE %~ SU-SCIENCES %~ IRAMIS %~ ALLIANCE-SU
